چکیده

Quench propagation velocity in conductors having a large amount of stabilizer outside the multif i lamentary area is considered. The current redistribution process between the multif i lamentary area and the stabilizer can strongly affect the quench propagation. A criterion is derived determining the conditions under which the current redistribution process becomes significant, and a model of effective stabilizer area is suggested to describe its influence on the quench propagation velocity. As an illustration, the model is applied to calculate the adiabatic quench propagation velocity for a conductor geometry with a multif i lamentary area embedded inside the stablizer.

Near-adiabatic quench experiments on short YBa2Cu3O7− coated conductors

Minimum quench energy and normal zone propagation velocity are measured on short YBa2Cu3O7− coated conductors in self-field at temperatures ranging from 40 to 77 K. The sample is cooled via a cryocooler with a cryostat pressure of 10−4 Pa, creating a nearly adiabatic environment. A normal zone is created by pulsing a heater that is attached to the sample surface with a thin layer of alumina-fil...

An equation for the quench propagation velocity valid for high field magnet use of REBCO coated conductors

Based on a study of the thermophysical properties, we derived a practical formula for the normal zone propagation velocity appropriate for REBa2Cu3O7-x coated conductors in high magnetic fields. An analytical expression to evaluate the current sharing temperature as a function of the operating conditions is also proposed. The presented study has allowed us to account for experimental results no...

Analysis of the quench propagation along Nb3Sn Rutherford cables with the THELMA code. Part I: Geometric and thermal models

The paper describes the new lumped thermal model recently implemented in THELMA code for the coupled electromagnetic–thermal analysis of superconducting cables. A new geometrical model is also presented, which describes the Rutherford cables used for the accelerator magnets. A first validation of these models has been given by the analysis of the quench longitudinal propagation velocity in the ...

Three Dimensional FEM Quench Simulations of Superconducting Strands

The detailed phenomena in quench starting of Nb3Sn strands are simulated in 3-D and in time using ANSYS and FEMLAB programs. The current sharing between the superconductor and copper stabilizer in strands at the beginning of a quench was studied and displayed in time. The differences in copper configuration and RRR value of copper were found to have large effect to the stability and quench prop...

THE NORMAL ZONE IN YBa2Cu3O6+x-COATED CONDUCTORS (POSTPRINT)

We consider the distribution of an electric field in YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO)-coated conductors for a situation in which the DC transport current is forced into the copper stabilizer due to a weak link—a section of the superconducting film with a critical current less than the transport current. The electric field in the metal substrate is also discussed. The results are compared with recent experime...
